Salem's Haunted Happenings runs the full month of October and draws crowds in the hundreds of thousands. Almost none of them need a car. This guide covers the route from midtown Manhattan, how long each leg actually takes, and which October dates are calm enough to enjoy.

The pattern repeats every year: weekends fill first, the last week fills hardest, and midweek stays walkable.
If you can move your trip by two days, move it. The second week of October has the same decorations, the same museums and the same tours as Halloween weekend, with a fraction of the queue.

2. The Route, in Three Legs
Salem sits 16 miles up the coast from Boston. There is no direct bus from New York, and you do not want one - driving into Salem in October means circling for parking that is not there. The reliable version is bus to Boston, then commuter rail.

North Station to Salem
MBTA Commuter Rail, Newburyport/Rockport Line. Salem station is a seven-minute walk from the Witch Museum and ten from Salem Common. Trains run roughly hourly, more often at peak.

Door to door is about five and a half hours including the two transfers. That is close enough to a day trip that people attempt it, and far enough that we would not recommend it on a weekend.

3. Which Departure to Take
The 11:00 AM bus is the only one that gets you into Salem with daylight left. The later two are for anyone staying the night.

Salem arrival assumes a 20-minute connection at North Station. Check live times before booking - commuter rail frequency drops after 8 PM.
A day trip only works midweek. On an October Saturday the return train out of Salem is standing room and the platform queue runs down the ramp; missing one train costs an hour. On a Tuesday it is a fifteen-minute wait and a seat.
Fares from New York start at $17, and midweek departures are usually the cheapest of the week.
4. What Is On in October
Haunted Happenings has run every October since 1982 and covers the whole month. 2026 is also Salem's quadricentennial, so several events are larger than usual. These are the dates worth planning around.
Thursday, October 1 - Haunted Happenings Grand Parade
The 29th parade opens the festival on the first Thursday of the month, running from Shetland Park to Salem Common. Free to watch. This year's theme is Old-School Halloween. Arrive early for a spot on the Common.
Weekends, late September through October - Haunted Happenings Marketplace
Artisan and vendor market on Salem Common and around Derby Square, Saturdays and Sundays through the month, plus Halloween itself.
Saturday, October 10 - Howl-o-ween Pet Parade
Costumed dogs on Derby Wharf, mid-morning. One of the few large events that finishes before lunch.
All month, daily - Museums, trial sites and ghost tours
The Salem Witch Museum, the Witch House, the Peabody Essex Museum and the 1692 Witch Trials Memorial are open throughout. Evening ghost tours and the Psychic Fair run daily. Book tours ahead for any weekend after the 15th.
Saturday, October 31 - Halloween night
Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, which makes it the single most crowded day Salem will see. If your reason for going is the atmosphere rather than the bragging rights, pick almost any other date.
Dates come from the Salem Chamber of Commerce and Destination Salem. Confirm on the official festival calendar before travelling - individual events shift year to year.
5. Day Trip or Overnight
Salem hotels sell out for October by early summer, and the rooms still available in September are priced accordingly. If you did not book in the spring, two options remain sensible.
Stay in Boston, day trip to Salem
Boston rooms in October are ordinary Boston rooms. The commuter rail runs late enough to get you back after an evening tour, and you keep a city to come home to.
Go up and back the same day, midweek
